HOW TO CREATE EFFECTIVE POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS

November 13th, 2007
  1. Back Ground Preparation:Before starting to prepare a presentation the teacher must have sufficient background preparation for content ans well as other ingredients-viz; pictures, diagrams, tables, scientific data etc.
  2. Imagine Yourself in the Place of the Learner: Then only you can arrange the content suitable for the audience.
  3. Choose a pleasing Layout: The layout and the colours chosen must not be straining or distractive to the spectators.
  4. Present the Ideas in a Logical Order: The ideas presented must have a logical sequence. First things must come first unless you are trying to dramatise the situation
  5. Checking Previous Knowledge of Learners: Instead of listing the previous knowledge expected, we can present them in the form of questions or situations to check the previous knowledge well integrated with the presentation.
  6. Do not Present more than 7 lines per Slide: Our aim is to transact the information, knowledge and understanding, not to “cover” the topic/syllabus.
  7. Do not use ‘unwanted’ animations, pictures and sounds which are not relevant to the topic: I have seen many using clapping sound and many other background sounds along with their presentation. This has a negative role on knowledge transaction. Add sounds and animations only if they are necessary and relevant to the content. There is no need to demonstrate our expertise in animating when we are preparing a slide show for teaching.
  8. Avoid Errors: “To Err Is Human” But if we add errors in presentations, it can prove inhuman. The visual media has a greater effect on memory and the learners are prone to carry with them the errors we make on the presentation. So, take utmost care and revise the prepared presentation thoroughly before presenting.
  9. Time Management: The number of slides and the content chosen must match the time available for the class. It is a good practice to rehearse along with your narration to check for the time consumption. Also we must leave ample time for clarification of any doubt that may arise during the class.
  10. Do not say Everything on the Slides. The teacher is alive and he is supposed to give life to the slides. The role of a teacher can never be replaced by electronic equipments. So, the active involvement of the teacher must be ensured during slideshow through a projector.
